Almost every object ever designed contains some kind of connection which is vital to its construction, function or appearance. Whether they are unique or standardized solutions, patented universal joints or an improvised piece of tinkering, we find joints between two or more parts everywhere: from anonymous everyday items to designer furniture, suspension bridges to solar satellites, at nano level and in huge edifices. These connective elements may be made of metal alloys, standard plastics, high-performance carbon fibre materials, or – more traditionally – of wood, iron, string, wool or bone glue. Yet they all share one important feature: they rarely attract attention; in fact they are usually neatly concealed so as to be as unobtrusive as possible.

The exhibition offers a comprehensive overview while also exploring the type of connections that have had the biggest influence on contemporary design and architecture, or which seem to anticipate future developments.

The “U-joints” exhibition series is constantly being expanded and includes a research programme and book project. Since the initial launch in 2018 at the Salone del Mobile, Milan, a team led by Andrea Caputo and Anniina Koivu has been exploring the multifaceted world of joints and connective techniques.
